Easy Target, the third book in the Elite Ops series, is a constant action and suspense read with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. Though it may be categorized as romantic suspense, the story was more heavily weighted toward the action and suspense side than romance.

Many books that are part of a series can usually be read on their own without compromising the enjoyment of the book. While the same could be said for Easy Target, I would strongly recommend reading the first two books in the series before starting this one as there is a tremendous amount of backstory that comes from those books and helps tie the series together. The elements of the backstory are revealed during the course of this book, but I know I personally would have benefitted by reading the other ones first. The story is extremely detailed, almost to the point where the intricate details were bogging me down just a bit while reading.

You've got Mexican cartels, human trafficking, convoluted plans to try and capture and/or kill our main characters, explosions and traitors in the midst--and it's all non-stop and in your face through the entire read. The romance between the main characters? While it does have a place in the story, to me it felt like a minor plot point compared to the action and suspense.

I did have a bit of a hard time feeling the connection between Bryan and Sassy, mostly due to their individual difficulties with both thinking they should not be feeling they way they do toward each other. Even though they are insanely attracted to each other and have been for as long as they can remember (though neither telling the other), they won't allow themselves to indulge in their feelings and bounce back and forth between hot and steamy and pushing each other away.

Easy Target is an action-packed story and will appeal to fans of the genre who prefer the action part to an overwhelming romance. Recommended for 18+ for adult topics and situations.

Action packed story that literally picks up where the last book left off. As this series has many crossover plots from the previous books I would recommend reading in order.

Bryan Fisher who is her brother's best friend comes to Africa to save her. He and Sassy have a one of those histories of where they've both liked the other but Bryan doesn't think he's good enough for her and it wouldn't be cool to lust after your best friends sister. These two fight their attraction all while trying to survive train wrecks, bombs, drug cartels, and getting shot.

In the midst of all of this is the crossover plot of the Mexican cartel and sex trafficking in Africa, Sassy's brother in a Mexican prison being accused of killing his girlfriend who she thinks was actually sent to Africa to be sold. What's got her into the mess she is in trying to prove her brother's innocence and the cartel want her silenced.

As with the previous books there are some resolutions but there are still many things left unresolved.

Sassy Smith was kidnapped trying to prove her brother's innocence in the disappearance of his girlfriend. This leads to a Mexican Cartel, almost being sold with a truck full of woman and Bryan, her brother's best friend. Sassy has had an interesting with Bryan, he's the last person she wants to help save her.

This was a very fast paced story. Loved the action from page one and it didn't stop throughout. The suspense made this a page turner.

Adding #1 and #2 to the TBR to find out what I missed!

ARA'S NOTE:
It has never been my thing to read a book that is part of a series that I haven't been following. I somehow feel like I'm an intruder who does not have a clue who the people she's reading about are. That was my exact hesitation when I was offered to review Easy Target, but me being me, I love a good action along with awesome romance. So I took the bull by its horns and said to hell with it.

SYNOPSIS:
AEGIS: an elite team of ex-military men who will do anything for their country…and their women.

Fighting to clear her brother of murder, freelance reporter Sassy Smith is suddenly kidnapped and thrown into a truck with other women who are about to be sold…or worse. When she sees an opportunity for escape Sassy takes it, but she may have just jumped from the frying pan into the fire.

Former Marine Bryan Fisher (aka Hollywood) is no stranger to dangerous situations, or to his best friend's little sister. When he rescues Sassy, Bryan is determined to keep her safe…if he can keep his hands off of her. Because Sassy is all grown up and not at all like the girl he used to know. But he's got bigger problems. And with enemies coming at them from every corner, Bryan and Sassy will need to work together if they're going to survive.

CHARACTER BACKGROUND:
Sassy Smith is a stubborn, passionate, and strong woman. She's been used to doing things on her own with a "me against the world" attitude, so she's not used to taking other people in consideration. She's been in love with her brother's best friend since she was a teenager but she has no expectations for them in the future...especially since they're struggling to survive the present.

Brian Fisher has a lot of issues; he's emotionally detached, mentally scarred, and he's always been self-deprecating. He feels like he would never be good enough for anyone, especially Sassy, the only girl he's ever loved.

TO LOVE:
I've started reading this book about two weeks ago, but a couple dozen pages in I dropped it. I felt detached to the characters mostly because they've already been introduced in preceding installments of the series. But yesterday, I half-heartedly picked it up again because I had to write a review. A curious thing happened -- I ended up loving it! Given, I felt like I had no clue as to what they're talking abput, but that's my fault completely due to the fact that I haven't bothered reading the two books that came before it. Anyway, when the action started that's when I got really engaged. The descriptions weren't all that graphic or specific, but one can use his/her imagination to picture the scene so that wasn't a problem. The story was just really exciting, and there are loads of conspiracy happening that you don't know what's right anymore. I also loved how character got hurt or died, not because I'm an antagonist, but because it's realistic. Other books usually have the male leads come off as though they're invinsible or something, and a story that shows how men get hurt...that's really good.

TO BLEH:
I felt like Sassy did...nothing. She is very hard-headed and she does things on a whim without thinking of its repurcussions. She's a very complicated woman (not in a food way) and that's saying something considering I'm of the same gender. The growth between Sassy and Brian was also lacking. The ending didn't really satisfy me, and I'm not talking about the fact that there would be a part 4, but because things felt rushed between the two leads. Like, "that's the ending?"

SUMMARY:
This is an action-packed, conspiracy-laden, and sizzle-squeezed book. It's exciting and engaging, however I recommend that you read all other books in the series first. Do not make my mistake. I bestow 4 stars to you, Easy Target. *wink*

Sassy Smith is a freelance reporter chasing a story from Mexico to Africa, a story that could lead to the exoneration and release of her brother from a Mexican jail, when she gets kidnapped. Her brother's best friend and former marine, Bryan Fisher, who was already in Africa jumps in to rescue her and now it's a race against the faceless bad guys to get to safety and figure out what's going on. Both Sassy and Bryan have been in love with each other for a long time, but Bryan would never betray his best friend by getting involved with his sister but and with the heightened emotions from the danger they both face, keeping their hands off each other becomes increasingly difficult.

For me, the fun in reading romantic suspense is the action, mystery, danger and conspiracies and I got all of that in Easy Target. The action really is exciting and so realistic and I loved it! With a mystery that spreads out in several books and a conspiracy that has the characters on their toes as race from continent to continent, Ms. Thomas does a great job keeping the reader engaged.

However, I had an issue with the characters. Sassy and Bryan trying to survive danger worked just fine for me, but Sassy and Bryan trying to navigate their love lives did not do it for me. Sassy is very impulsive and stubborn, prone to rushing headlong into situations that put them all in danger. Bryan for the most part was hung up on the fact that he was not good enough for Sassy and could not damage his relationship with her brother by getting involved with her and the resolution of their romance left me wanting more. That in no way takes away from my enjoyment of the book and I'll say again that Easy Target was a great read.

My only advice to any reader is: while each book can be read as a standalone, to get the full experience of the series I recommend reading the books in order (exactly what I should have done!).

Were there parts that I felt a little bit lost?

Yes.

I'm thinking so...

...but there was enough there that I wasn't lost. There were statements made that you knew were dealing with previous books, but bottom line -- you were able to get enough of Sassy and Bryan's history to appreciate their story.

When we start out, we have Sassy (name on birth certificate? Sarah Anne), who is a reporter by trade, trying to figure out how to help her brother's case. Trey is currently incarcerated and the woman who was last seen with him is still missing. On Sassy's mission to find helpful information, though, she ends up in the wrong hands.

...and in swoops Bryan to the rescue.

Bryan and Sassy have history -- not romantic history, but history. Bryan and Trey have been best friends forever; Sassy has crushed on Bryan since a teenager and little did she know, he returned the crush -- but he was older and no good for her, so he enlisted and left town.

With their history, it was easy to watch the 'quick' falling in love that they do -- because honestly, there was nothing quick to their relationship. This story takes place from December 23 to New Year's -- like I said, quickly. But Bryan and Sassy go through an awful lot in that time -- near rape, mugging, explosions, derailings... All because someone stuck her nose in things that she shouldn't have been.

What I liked most about this story, I've decided, was Bryan's belief that he wasn't good enough for Sassy -- he feels this way up until literally the last paragraph, kid you not. He has fought himself where Sassy is concerned for years, and watching him struggle with what he deserves versus what he thinks he deserves, was enjoyable to read. I love watching big strong men struggle...

Only she uses this tactic as a smoke screen to deflect away from the effect an incident in high school impacted on her life.

After his best friend's kid sister dared him to kiss her, Bryan "Hollywood" Fisher left Mississippi and joined the Marines. Now twelve years later, he's back to help and protect Sassy as she tries to uncover evidence to gain her brother's release from a Mexican jail for a crime he didn't commit. Only Sassy is all grown up now...

The tentative romance between Sassy and Bryan isn't the driving force of the plot – more of an enhancement. Flitting from Africa to the US, the action packed story is full of suspense, conspiracy, deception and hope. Our protagonists whilst incredibly attracted to each other, really have a problem communicating their feelings for one another. Both looking for excuses for not being together instead of finding a way of making a personal relationship work. That is once they are both out of danger and have achieved what they set out to do. Somehow, against the odds they manage to do just that.

I absolutely loved this book, but found that at times I was struggling to keep track with all the information; there are a lot of details crammed within the pages and wonder if I would have benefited by reading the first two books first, if only to familiarise myself with the supporting characters and their backgrounds? This doesn't detract too much from the overall enjoyment and I'll definitely be catching up with the series and other works by this author.

Sassy is quite like her name. I liked that she wasn't afraid to take care of herself when she was in trouble and that happens more than once in this tale. She is very sharp when it comes to getting herself out of jams, only not so sharp when it comes to dealing with Bryan. He doesn't help the situation either.

Bryan left town after graduating high school, mostly to get away from Sassy, his best friend's little sister, thinking Trey Smith wouldn't want him messing around with her. But now that they are back together, those feelings haven't washed away over the years and he wants her. She wants him. The only thing getting away is their own misguided thoughts of honor, friendship and commitment.

I really did like Sassy and Bryan's story. Although it was predictable, it was still fun to read these two dancing around each other. There's also a lot of action in this, from escaping a gang rape to a train crash and numerous explosions. These action scenes were well written and exciting. I recommend reading the first two books in the series to get a better grasp on the details of the drug and human traficking storyline. I would read more from this author based on reading this title.

Okay, I never understood why Sassy always got underneath Bryan's skin, but it was finally made clear in Easy Target. I always thought he just didn't like reporters, nope it's a bit more complicated than that. As we know Sassy has been working on clearing her brother's name, and Bryan just wanted to make sure she stayed safe. After all he was best friend to her brother.

Yes! We have a best friend after sister romance. However, Bryan doesn't want to have feeling for Sassy, because of being best friend with her brother. What do we? We run away from out feelings. Yet, he gets himself in the mix of things and feelings run high.

Other than the whole romance thing, we still have a problem that needs to be solve and the danger level is kicked up a bit. Bad guys lurking around every corner. Easy Target is a pretty good read and I was surprise by the ending (meaning the epilogue). I don't know if there is going to be another story. I do hope there is for Sassy's brother. Anyway, this is a fast pace action book book with best friend is in love with sister romance. I know I'm glossing over a lot, but there is a lot that might be given away to the story. I know I have been know to get so excited to give too much away. Pretty darn good story.

First, I think you really need to read the books that came before this in the series. The description doesn't say that it should not be read as a standalone but it shouldn't be. Second, I found no chemistry between Sassy and Bryan, and never really developed anything more than a passing interest in either of them - perhaps at least partly because I have not read the other books in the series. As a result of 1 and 2, I basically just skimmed this book.

Third, this was yet another book where the female gets all emotional and runs off half-cocked, even though the guy she is with and his buddies are experts in whatever shit is going down and have come up with a plan, which gets completely f-ed up because of the female's boneheadedness and then she needs to be saved, usually at the cost of a number of injury (or worse) to the good guys. (The women don't shoulder all of the blame in these stupid plots. The men often don't tell the females what is going on, which just makes things worse.) Here, Sassy was even told by multiple people not to go off half-cocked (and she had some internal dialogue about it). But she did it anyway. I find this incredibly frustrating and maybe it bothered me more in this book simply because I had no interest or investment in either of these characters.

If your a fan of this series like me, you are sure to enjoy this but I would recommend the series to anyone who likes a good action, suspense story especially those by Cindy Gerard, Kaylea Cross or Katie Reus for example.

Action packed thriller with a scoop of romance on the side.

I thoroughly enjoyed Easy Target by Kay Thomas!
Let me make a few pointers first.
1) Do yourself a favor and read both book one and two before reading Easy Target. That way you'll understand the entire back story.
2) Start off reading early. This book is very addictive and you won't want to put it down.
3) Enjoy the surprises. Don't cheat and read the ending before you get there.

Bravo!
Really. This trilogy is more one big story in 3 parts, than 3 separate books.
All very unputdownable.

The action/adventure part to this book is still well done, as is the case for the first two books.
What an ending. :-)

The characters have a .. somewhat darker background this time. :-(
Still. The Heroine does something at some point which seems TSTL. Ugh.

I guess it had to be cut or something, but the boss Gavin doesn't quite get as much development/progress near the end as I'd've hoped. Oh wel

Perhaps it could've been more explicit about how the action/adventure wrapped up.

Great story! This book may be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading each novel in the order it was written for a true understanding of the overall story line.

I have loved reading this series. The action and suspense is very well thought out and all the loose ends are tied up in this book. The action is perfectly paced and any down time is filled with the ever present attraction between Sassy and Bryan. I enjoyed the easy teasing between characters and loved the addition of Bear.

This is Sassy, Trey sister and his BF Bryan's story. I had to read this one after reading the previous 2 stories in this series. I really liked the strength of Sassy and how she stands on her own feet in this story. She's a participant in the action and they rescue each other at times. Finally we have the answers to who's been pulling the strings in this escapade. Oh dear now we have Trey's story coming... This is Sassy, Trey sister and his BF Bryan's story. This is the story of Sassy Smith and Bryan "Hollywood" Fisher. They are both working to clear Sassy's brother Trey's name from a murder he didn't commit. It was fast paced and so very good! Kay Thomas knows how to write. The ending of this book left me wanting more!

"The only promise I can make is that I won't hurt you." "I know you won't." And in that moment she believed him.

Ahhhh! Swoon! Love Hollywood!

Bryan and Sassy's story picks up where Personal Target left off, so I would highly recommend reading the series in order. Non-stop action and secrets revealed will keep you hooked until the very end, where an unexpected surprise awaits you in the epilogue. I can't wait for to see how the story unfolds in the next book!

Would actually rate it a 3.5, but liked the book better than Easy Target, so went up a notch.
Sassy, a free lance reporter is looking for her brother's missing fiancé and stumbles upon human trafficking. Bryan who is her brother's best friend and a marine is helping her and trying to protect her. Like the characters in this series.

I didn't grow up burning to be a writer. As a child I wasn't even much of a reader until fourth grade. That's when I was stuck at home with the flu and my big sister read THE BLACK STALLION aloud to me. For hours I was enthralled—shipwrecked in a foreign land and riding an untamed horse across the hot desert sand. Then tragedy struck. My sister lost her voice. (I think she caught my flu.) But I couldn't wait to hear what happened to Alec Ramsey—so I picked up that book, finished reading it by myself, and went in search of more adventures at the local library. Today I live in Dallas with my husband, our two children, and a shockingly-spoiled Boston terrier.
